The experience of removing sulfur oxides from flue gases by shale ash containing free calcium oxide is presented. It is shown that this is the simplest method since it does not require any additional equipment for preparing the absorbent for implementing the absorption process and for removing wastes formed at the power stations. The cheapest alkali compound - limestone - is used as an absorbent. However, this method complicates the operation of the boiler equipment at the station. The main shortcoming is the low intensity of the reaction between gaseous sulfur dioxide and powdered calcium oxide; nor does it ensure thorough purification. Various suggestions are given for confirmed research towards improvement of this method.
