This paper presents a reference on the simulation industry - the state of the art, how the simulator is used, different types of simulators, and how simulator use applies to the drilling industry. For those contemplating buying or developing a simulator, this paper cites the uses and pitfalls of the simulator in drilling applications. This paper is intended to aid the engineer and manager in making decisions pertaining to the development, acquisition, or use of a drilling simulator.
