Optimal capactive compensation of primary feeders of a radial MV distribution network, uniformly loaded with time-varying load, using both fixed and switched shunt capacitors, is considered. The developed procedure allows finding the number, type (fixed or switched), size, location and operation time for each capacitor, so as to obtain the maximum net saving, due to power and energy loss reduction, taking into account also shunt capacitor cost. For the capactive compensation type examined, the general expressions of power and energy loss, that are utilized in the economic objective function, are found. After explaining the method of resolution, a MV primary feeder problem is studied using a computer program, for different load conditions. Particularly, by varying both parameters and shape of reactive load diagram, some general characteristics of this capactive compensation are highlighted.
