High-frequency equipment used in the USSR to improve the quality and efficiency of production, particularly in metallurgy and machine building is described. Induction heating of metals is successfully used for heat treatment, induction surface hardening, melting, plastic deformation, welding of pipe, profiles, and electric-cable jackets, growing single crystals, heating gases in plasmatrons, and in other processes. Dielectric heating is widely employed to weld thermoplastic materials, to heat molding powders prior to compression, for drying of chemical materials, for bonding, to accelerate polymerization, etc. Plans for future development of this type of equipment are outlined.
