The local and integral growth rates are investigated for a weak counterpropagating field in a two-pass amplifier with frequency shifting phase conjugate (PC) mirror. The shift frequency corresponding to the maximum local growth rate is determined. For obtaining the maximum gain in double-pass amplifiers using active materials such as garnet or ruby it is advisable to use PC mirrors that would shift the frequency of the reflected field by 10** minus **2-10** minus **1 of the line width. In double-pass systems such as CO//2-amplifiers it is advisable to use PC mirrors that would reflect the field without any shift of the carrier frequency.
