Carbon black filled sulphur-vulcanizates of natural rubber and synthetic cis-polyisoprenes may be differentiated by the pyrolyzates obtained at a low temperature, eg 350 degree C. Examination of the pyrolyzates is carried out by IR spectroscopy or gas chromatography. Successful differentiation is limited to vulcanizates containing both carbon black and at least a moderate amount of sulfur. The method is not applicable to peroxide-cured rubbers and 'sulfurless' or low sulfur content vulcanizates.
