Perfluoro-2-methylpent-2-ene, a commercially available dimer of hexafluoropropene, was shown to be able to construct the hydrophobic group of surfactants via the reaction with a bromo-tolunitrile in the presence of cesium fluoride, followed by acidic hydrolysis. Thus obtained sodium p-(perfluoroalkyl)methyl-benzoate (R//fCH//2C//6H//4COONa) showed excellent surface properties, and lowered the surface tension of water as low as 19 mN/m at the critical micelle concentration.
