Kinetic study on propylene polymerization with a supported titanium catalyst

The effect of different cocatalysts (Al(CH3)3, Al(C2H5)3, methyl aluminoxane (MAO)) to TiCl4 catalyst supported on MgCl2 has been investigated in terms of activity and stereospecificity for propylene polymerization. When MAO used as a cocatalyst, the highest activity and stereospecificity were found as compared to the other cocatalysts. From short time polymerization kinetics, the advantage of MAO as a cocatalyst may be its capability to act as an electron donor via oxygen to Lewis acidic sites in the catalyst.
