The 1977-1979 PVRC Exploratory Gasket Test Program investigated the leakage behavior of spiral wound asbestos gaskets, spiral wound graphite filled gaskets, and compressed asbestos gaskets. Over 2600 data points were generated from which a computer data bank was created. Empirical relations point to a simple calculation procedure for estimating leak rate. Sample calculations are presented and a relation between the proposed equations and ASME Code M and Y factors is discussed.
