The number of widely-differing fields where tin has either an established use, or the potential of future commercial utilisation, is very large, and is probably greater than that for any other metal. In addition, many of these fields are at the forefront of technological progress, and are subject to rapid changes to meet new demands. These facts are reflected in the broad programme of research being carried out at I. T. R. I. , which has the twin functions of improving and extending existing use-areas for tin, and also of developing completely new ones. Progress in tin research is described in the latest Annual Report of the International Tin Research Council, and is summarised in the following.
