Using modern imaging technology, an attempt was made to determine whether the optic nerve head (ONH) is altered in early dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT). Real-time topographic images of the ONH were obtained from individuals in the early stages of DAT and age-matched controls. Disc, cup and rim area, cup-to-disc area ratio, mean retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and RNFL cross section area were evaluated. In general, it was found that these parameters do not differ significantly between DAT and age-matched individuals.
