The authors, with the help of the SEM Subdivision on Fracture of Concrete and Rock, have compiled various notations used by investigators in applying fracture mechanics concepts to crack initiation, crack propagation and fracture of concrete, rock and other cementitious materials. The report was completed in September 1986 and sent to members of the Subdivision for comment and approval which was obtained in May 1987. This paper presents the notations obtained from a total of 112 references through September 1986 for three different test geometries: 1. Single-edge-notch beam in bending; 2. Compact tension specimen/double cantilever specimen; 3. Plate tension specimen.
