The applications and advantages of heat treatment of tool steels in steam atompshere are discussed. It is shown that this type of treatment increases tool life by at least 50%; typical examples are presented. The theoretical aspects of steam heat treatment are discussed, and the design and operation of heat treating furnaces with steam atmosphere are described.
