The purpose of this study is to characterize stainless steels as a function of their alloying elements with regard to their resistance to localized corrosion phenomena in cold seawater. The authors seek to analyze the behavior of various grades of steel with respect to crack corrosion, which, in their opinion, is the decisive criterion governing the utilization of these materials in seawater. It is shown that only high-alloy stainless steels of type ZO CD 28-2 and Z2 NCDU 25-20 show almost total cracking resistance in flowing seawater, at least at ambient temperature.
