Laser marking systems fall into one of two general categories: mask markers or stroke markers. In general, mask markers use transversely excited, atmospheric-pressure carbon-dioxide (TEA CO//2) lasers to project a mask onto the workpiece, while stroke marking utilizes Nd: YAG lasers and scanning mirrors to move a tightly focused laser beam over the workpiece. However, each of these two types of lasers can be used in the other marking mode, and other types of lasers - most prominently, the excimer laser - are beginning to appear in marking applications. Laser marking is a well-proven application of lasers in the industrial world with very good chances for growth. This paper lists common advantages of lasermarking techniques, and analyzes the market for it. It also discusses costs and advantages of TEA CO//2 laser markers, operating costs for Nd:YAG laser markers and general trends in this field.
