During August and September 1984 the anaerobic hypolimnion of a small lake in Holstein was artificially aerated with oxygen from the photic zone of the same lake. Using this method, the oxygen concentration in the hypolimnion was raised from 0 to about 3 mg O//2/l within 24 hrs, at a cost of about 0. 2 kWh/kg O//2 only. The method and the results obtained are discussed.
