The situation of the surface coal mines in Vietnam and their developments are evaluated. Open pit mining has been contributing a great deal to the total output of coal produced in Vietnam. In order to secure their stable position in Vietnam's coal mining sector, the surface coal mines will have to upgrade their technology, equipment, and management to meet demands, and adopt the proper strategy to develop in the future. The responsibility lies with not only the Vietnamese surface coal mines but also the Vietnam Coal Corporation and the ministries and the government.
