The experience gained from the operation of different coal preparation plants has, over a period of time, been applied to the development of control techniques. Advances in this field have been made by the United Kingdom's coal mining industry. In this article, the authors outline the basic elements and lessons learnt during the design and operation of control systems in three generations of plant.
