The requirement of power factor correction for large arc furnaces in order to attain values above 0. 9, which poses some problems of selection of the total reactive power to be installed and of its division into several capacitor batteries, is considered. Some principles are indicated which may serve as a basis for such a selection. They assure, at a minimum cost, absorption of the entire reactive power required, without changing over to a leading power factor and avoiding excitation of various harmonics generated by the furnace.
