A systematic measurement of turbulence characteristics in open channel flows over smooth, rough and porous beds was conducted by making use of dual-sensor hot-film anemometers after their calibrating techniques had been established enough to be of practical use. Based on the experimental analysis, the effects of hydraulic parameters on the structure of turbulence are systematically clarified with a view to the physical interpretation of turbulent phenomena. Some phenoemnological models of turbulence which can give a quantitative description of its dynamics are proposed.
