It is shown how the now common Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS) deliver clean, regulated power continuously to the computer, regardless of outages and disturbances on the utility system. The solid-state UPS consists of a rectifier/charger, static inverter, and storage battery, plus associated controls and switchgear. A 250,000 UPS went on line recently at Continental Telephone Service Corp's data-processing center at Bakersfield, Calif. Equipped with a diesel generator to provide a redundant power source, the center has a reliability as close to 100% as possible, 24 hours a day, every day of the year. A description of the UPS is given.
