It is established that the heat removal increases by a factor of 2. 0 to 2. 5 with a decrease in the width of the crystallizer water cooling duct from 19 to 5 mm and by a factor of 1. 3 to 1. 5 with a decrease in the thermal resistance of the wall from 106 to 36 mm**2 multiplied by (times) degree C/W. An increase in the heat removal leads to a crushing of the micro- and macrostructure of the peripheral zone of the ingots and to an improvement in the surface quality of the ingots.
