Fe3Al precipitates in iron-aluminium brass

Fe3Al precipitates with three morphologies have been observed in the microstructure of a brass containing aluminium and iron. Studies of the microstructural development show that these three morphologies reflect three stages of precipitate growth. The initially formed Fe3Al precipitates are coherent with the matrix. The growth of precipitates is along 111 direction during coarsening, which results in change in morphology (from cubic to dendritic) and the loss of coherency of the precipitates.
