Synchronous machines with rotating superconducting field windings have many important potential benefits; reduction of size, weight and losses, an improvement machines with system transient performance due to low machine reactances and the achievement of the corresponding economic gains. A three-year program for feasibility studies on a superconducting ac generator has been executed in collaboration by Mitsubishi Electric and Fuji Electric with the support of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) of the Japanese government. As a main part of this program, a 6250 kVA superconducting generator (2-pole, 60 Hz, 3600 rpm) with bridge-input capacitors and (ii) alternator. The relationships between various constructed. The electrical, mechanical and thermal characteristics of the generator were investigated by a series of tests. This paper describes the structure and the test results of this generator.
