Composite materials based on silver with included oxide particles have been used for many years as contacts for low voltage power engineering applications, that is for the switching of currents in the region from 50 to 4000 A at voltages of mainly 220 and 380 V. The microstructures of the different silver/metal oxide materials vary according to their composition and method of production. Due to the fact that the microstructure of the contact material has considerable influence on the properties relevant to its use, metallography has proved to be an extremely important tool in the development and quality control of this type of material. The variety of information which can be obtained with the help of metallographic investigations is described in this paper, using typical examples.
