In this paper, a code-aided adaptive equalization structure is presented for use in cellular mobile radio systems. The new structure combines adaptive equalization, decoding and interleaving. The performance of a TDMA system using the proposed equalizer is evaluated by means of computer simulation. Compared to the conventional equalizer, the proposed equalizer performs particularly well in a channel with moderate fade rate. In fast fading environments, e.g. at a maximum Doppler frequency fD = 100 Hz, the proposed equalizer results in an order of magnitude reduction on the irreducible BER delivered by a conventional equalizer.
