The 8.7-km-long Shinjuku Line forms part of the Central Circular metropolitan expressway, Japan's first underground highway. The Central Circular Line will total approximately 20 km when it is completed at the end of this century. The paper describes the project within the context of the Tokyo metropolitan area's existing and future traffic needs.
