Quantitative prediction of service life has been recognized for many years as essential to the cost-effective selection, use, and maintenance of coating systems. Preliminary research to develop improved methods for predicting the service life of coating systems has demonstrated that reliability theory and life-testing analysis offer an attractive alternative to the traditional accelerated aging approach used by the coatings industry. The preliminary data illustrate the feasibility of this approach for service-life prediction of coating systems. The data offer promise for successful application of the approach to a wide range of problems relating to service-life prediction for coating systems.
