New Developments in the Application of Cross Linked PE in the Cable Industry.

A report is given of the development of a new method of cross linking PE for cable insulation. In this process, most of the energy required for cross linking is introduced in the extruder head just ahead of the nozzle. Thus, a relatively large surface is provided for heat transfer in a short space. Furthermore, heat transfer from the steel of the extruder head to the flowing material is greater per area unit than heat transfer from the vapor at the surface of the already sheathed cable. Schematic drawings of the extruder unit and temperature distribution diagrams are given.
