This paper describes the arc form, together with filler- and base-metal melting characteristics for aluminum GMA welding; it also considers the influence of the welding power source characteristics on the stability of the arc and bead. The work discussed in this paper led to a new GMA welding control method. It involves a new control and ″mesospray″ welding to improve arc stabilization and simplicity of operation between the region of spray-type metal transfer and short-circuiting arc welding.
