A major development in compaction technology and practice had taken place in the UK. Written into the section on the compaction of bituminous materials was an option for the contractor to use an 'alternative' to the traditional deadweight roller - the stipulation being that the alternative machine (vibratory roller, rubber tyred roller) must achieve equivalent compaction to that of an 8 tonne deadweight. The 'end-result' option meant that the contractor could now use a 2 tonne operating weight vibratory roller in place of an 8 tonne deadweight enabling him to significantly reduce capital and transport costs whilst increasing operational flexibility.
