A uniform methodology of defining the shell stability is presented in the format of limit states design. New interpolation formulae have been derived in the elastic range on the basis of statistics of shell stability experiments and probability considerations. In the elastic-plastic range the formulae result from interaction mechanisms of elastic and plastic instability modes. They are based on the Rankine-Merchant-Murzewski unconventional approach. These formulae make it possible to include the influence of imperfections.
