Today, surface mount technology (SMT) is a major tool in designing products with the maximum degree of manufacturability. SMT allows for greater utilization of printed circuit board (PCB) area; smaller, more compact products; higher product reliability; and a much higher degree of automation than can presently be achieved with PTH technology. A systematic approach to developing a surface mount technology product that is manufacturable by design is outlined.
