An upflow biofilm reactor for the nitrification of eutrofic water containing high levels of ammonia was developed. A reactor medium that offers a high surface (and thus a high loading capacity) and that can be rinsed effectively was chosen. After the determination of the design parameters in a pilot reactor a water production plant including three bioreactors is built.
