Export wastepaper prices to Asia take steep fall, hitting lowest levels since mid-1999

Prices of US wastepaper materials experienced their largest fall in December 2000 since the middle of 1999. The suppliers reported few orders and falling prices on both the coasts. The average prices of old corrugated containers were down $10/ton from November on the East and West Coasts. Mixed paper exported to Asia plummeted $30/ton on the West Coast and $10/ton on the East Coast. China and South Korea continued some demand for old newspapers at their newsprint mills, but did not give orders for old corrugated containers (OCC), mixed paper and sorted white ledger (SWL).
