Being an oil producer and exporter, Iraq has started serious efforts for utilizing solar energy relatively recently. During the seventies, solar energy activities comprised isolated research work conducted at academic institutions. It wasn't until the establishment of the Solar Energy Research Cent (SERC) at the Scientific Research Council in 1980 that serious steps were taken in the application of solar energy in Iraq. The many types of research of SERC are briefly described.
