Since 1975, the principal textile-producing areas in England have suffered two staggering increases in the cost of mains water. This article details the efforts of some English textile firms to offset these increases by installing their own, independent water supply systems which can provide far less costly water for commercial consumption. The borehole systems for abstraction of water, borehole installation, and licensing are discussed, and the economies currently available to textile manufacturers or processors through the use of independent water systems are analyzed.
