Thsi study has been carried out to obtain data for selecting materials best suited for emission-control devices and clarify their high-temperature gas corrosion mechanism. Oxidation proceeds faster in exhaust gas than in air. From the results of calculating S potentials in automobile emissions of a CO-CO//2-COS-SO//2-S//2-O//2 system, it is concluded that oxidation by CO//2, H//2O and O//2 is accelerated by S and by the formation of S compounds such as sulfides of Fe, Cr or Ni.
