The effects of the partial pressure of steam in the range of 1 to 100 bar on the steam gasification of coals and cokes and the composition of resulting gases were investigated. Thermodynamic laws were applied to heterogeneous and homogeneous equilibria in the gas phase. In addition, results were assessed from non-isothermal measurements in a differential reactor at pressures from 1 to 70 bar, and temperatures from 300 to 1100 degree C. It is shown that a significant increase in the gasification rate could not be achieved by increasing the partial pressure of steam. However, the production of methane could be enhanced by an increase in the steam pressure.
