Capturing manufacturing experience using computer aided process planning

As an essential step in developing their computer integrated business (CIB), Woods of Colchester researched the scope for computer aided process planning (CAPP). They chose LOCAM, a manufacturing decision system from PAFEC Ltd. It is applied in four progressive stages, ending with a fully generative system which takes product data directly from the company's computer aided design (CAD) system and translates it automatically into working documents for shop-floor use. The benefits include large reductions in manufacturing lead times and inventory, as well as better cost control and the development of a central knowledge base which captures all relevant knowledge and experience of the staff.
