The fusion research devices in operation today always contain some number of impurity ions with charge and mass very different from those of the ions of the main plasma. In this letter we analyze a new type of current-driven instability in hot, impure plasmas which has not been discussed previously in the literature. We consider an isothermal, highly magnetized plasma containing a single species of impurity ions. The density of the ions of the main plasma, and the density of impurity ions, vary along the X axis.
