摘要
Three case histories are examined wherein unusual soil performance or engineering properties were encountered. The clay mineralogy and fabric are examined for each case. The first case involves an embankment failure on glacial Lake Edmonton clay. The clay is highly plastic and shows a pronounced secondary structure that controls mass strength. The second case is a clay from the Beaufort Sea. It has the unusual characteristic of the horizontal stress being up to twice the vertical stress. The third case deals with a clayey silt with which a serious foundation problem was experienced at the University of Calgary library during construction.
