The variety of housing accommodations for older Americans has expanded from the traditional custodial approach to include a range of possibilities from nursing homes to detached cottages, generally distinguished by the level of care and the number of residential services available. Among the options are: retirement villages, independent apartments, shared housing/group homes, congregate-care apartments, health-related facilities/personal care, intermediate care facilities, and skilled nursing facilities.
