Two essentially different methodological approaches are presently used for calculating maximum discharges of the rainfall runoff in water-management planning. The first is based on constructing probability distributions of maximum discharges with the use of available series of observations of the runoff and extropolation of these curves to the region of low probabilities of exceedance. The second is based on estimating the maximum hydrometeorological effects on a drainage basin and calculation of discharges corresponding to these estimates. Substantially new possibilities for estimating the probable maximum discharges occur with the use of physicomathematical models of the runoff. This paper examines the possibilities of estimating the maximum discharges of rainfall floods by means of a physicomathematical model of rainfall runoff developed for conditions of the Carpathian region based.
