Image segmentation method using the entropy of histogram and genetic algorithms

Image segmentation is an old and difficult problem in computer vision systems. An image segmentation method based on the entropy of histogram of grey-level pictures and genetic algorithms (GAs) is presented. The segmentation problem is formulated as one of optimization and the entropy of histogram is taken as the segmentation quality criteria, which also fits well with GA. The GA efficiently searches the segmentation parameter space. The goal of this method is to obtain the optimal threshold and it is adopted to both single and double threshold segmentation.
