Quebec, the Caribbean and Latin America become partners in power

The expertise developed by hydropower companies in Quebec in Canada is being exported to Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) that have very high energy demands compared with Quebec. Competition from thermoelectric power is high in Latin America, but small and medium sized hydro power plants can still be competitive. The Latin American Energy Organization and Quebec have embarked on an energy cooperation programme to promote the development of such hydro power plants. The specific objectives of the programme are to renew the interest of local governments and investors in hydro power projects, to update and search for new hydropower projects, to promote partnerships between companies and investors from Quebec and LAC, to promote new project financing schemes and to promote transfer of technology.
