Investigations of Solidification in the Core of Killed Steel Ingots.

A quantitative investigation of the growth of the cone of sedimented globulites during the solidification of killed steel ingots is reported. The progress of solidification in horizontal and vertical directions was measured in a 1. 4 t ingot, and the amount of globulites formed per unit of time was determined by comparison with heat flow data. An equation is derived for calculation of the growth and the shape of the cone of sedimented globulites and the segregation of the core. Calculated data are compared with literature data on sulfur segregation in the core of 1. 2 to 30 t ingots and with results of model tests.
