Hollow glass waveguides for mid-infrared light transmission

Hollow SiO2- and GeO2-based glass waveguides were fabricated for mid-infrared light transmission. By changing the percentage of Si or Ge atoms in the glass system, we can control the low-loss wavelength range which appears near resonance absorption peak. Efficient transmission was demonstrated in the 7-12 μm wavelength range by using hollow waveguides.
