Incidents such as the Bhopal disaster and a growing awareness of chemical workplace hazards have heightened concern for how chemicals are handled in the plant. Although recent legislation is forcing plants to re-evaluate handling procedures, most recognize that a thorough chemical safety program just makes good business sense. This article discusses the issues involved, chemical characteristics, hazard recognition, material safety data sheets, and other aspects of the subject.
