Results of an X-ray diffraction study are presented which have confirmed the identity in structure of asphaltenes recovered from medium-sulfur crude oils and the materials stabilizing the emulsions of these oils. From the curves for reduced intensity, the asphaltene aromaticity and particle size have been determined; these values can be used as a basis for determining the average number of contacts between particles in the protective layer and hence the required consumption of demulsifier reagent.
